I’m the newb of the group in terms of my journey down the whiskey rabbit hole. But it has been amazing! Each time I try something, I learn something new about my palate. I’m excited to share this journey with the zbourbon whiskey community!
I have a sweet tooth. Full stop. Thus, I tend to like mash bills that have higher wheat content. Generally, when I venture out, I’m looking for that full body complexity – give me an open aroma with a sweet, leathery, and slightly spicy taste that finishes like butterscotch. I like it warm but without a lingering sting.
I also find that the sweetness I enjoy goes beyond the typical vanilla or maple and be more fruit-forward with “orchard fruits.”
I generally don’t like earthy, grassy, floral or bitter aromas, flavors or finishes. Something about eating a flower or chewing on grass doesn’t appeal to me.
I enjoy trying finished whiskies as I think they offer something interesting for the palate. So far Tokaji and Rum finishes are at the top, Ports and Chardonnay finishes are at the bottom. Amburana is on the list to try.
I’m finding that proofs between 105-115 is a sweet spot for me. My pours are neat. Sometimes I will crack a pour with a couple drops of water or drop a cube in to see how the flavor profile is exposed, but all of my reviews are straight from the bottle.
Even if we aren’t in lockstep palate-wise, hopefully my reviews can help guide you to a bottle you will enjoy.
Cheers!
Carl
